6.    Project description

As a result of the project implementation, the National Schengen information system (NS.SIS) will be prepared for connection with the Central Schengen information system (CS.SIS) for effective and high quality control of the external border of the Republic of Latvia and European Union, using EU and national information resources. Economic interests of EU and Latvia will be better protected, as well as domestic security will be ensured more efficiently.

To achieve such objective, the European Commission, within the specific period of time, must update the existing Second Generation National Schengen Information System up to the Interface Control Document version 3.0. System updating will include both enhancement of N.SIS II itself and enhancement of the related national data storage register, as well as SIRENE data flow system update. Along with the planned updating works compliance testing of the entire data processing complex will be required in cooperation with the developer of the Central Schengen information system. Considering complicity of such compliance testing I relation to number of tests to be done (more than 500 testing scenarios), prior to the official testing process, preparing of the abovementioned data processing complex, as well as performance of number of available scenarios shall be required, using simulator instead of the central system.
As a result, Latvian national part of the Second Generation National Schengen Information System will comply with the technical requirements of the European Commission, as well as commitments of the Republic of Latvia under Schengen Convention and Schengen Acquis will be ensured.

The project will be implemented within the period of 11 months (from 26 January 2011 to 30 December 2011).
